We lost our Dad, Grandad and Best mate on Wednesday December 4, 2013, aged 76 years. We were all with him as ‘Deano’ crooned him on his way into the waiting arms of his most beloved mother Joan Alice Young.

Our family would like to express our appreciation to RN Ann Marie from ward B2, HBDHB for the care, support and aroha she nursed our mate with, thank you so very much.

We celebrated his life on Saturday December 7, in the Dunstall Memorial Chapel, Edwardes Street, Napier. Tributes may be left at the website www.dunstalls.co.nz   or posted to the Young Family, c/- PO Box 1055, Napier 4140.

I am deeply saddened to learn of my first Cousins death. We had not seen each other for many years and my memories are of Gary as a young man starting out on his journey through life. I remember visiting Auntie Joan and Uncle Ivan in their Moera home. Gary was a good hockey player I am glad he was surrounded by a loving family. He deserved you all.

My sincere condolences to Gary's family, he was a great guy and the epitome of a team player: always ready to lower the tension with a yarn or two (usually at his own expense) and yet the most dependable and effective person in a crisis. During my time at the Shipping Corporation Gary bailed me out of a raft of dicey situations - Gary I owe you more than I ever said.
So Gary is gone, but not forgotten. As Kathleen Jenkins put it "Grieve if you will/But not for long/For in your memories/I will live on"

I met Gary in changing times in the Shipping industry. He became a valued friend and colleague freely sharing in a difficult time and wishing to put people at their ease. Although I lost contact when it came time for me to move on, his kindness lives on.
